Refried Beans



Add beans to 8 cups of water and bring to a boil. Slice and dice the onions, crush the garlic and add to the boiling beans. Add the other ingredients, cover and cook at medium heat for 2 hours. Smash the beans in the pot to absorb more of the flavors. Add more spices to taste. And serve.


1 cup pinto beans

3-4 crushed garlic cloves

1/4 white onion finely chopped

10 whole epazote leaves

sea salt to taste


And if you want to try Jintana's version, also add:

1-2 tbsp cumin

1 tsp dried oregano

ground black pepper to taste
